The most difficult combination of grain to join is end to end. Although such a joint could easily support loads purely in compression, there is normally some bending as well. Many of the elaborate scarf joints designed by those who work with timber frames are designed to convert end-to-end grain combinations in joints to side-to-side combinations. End-grain to side-grain is a commonly encountered situation that works well for most loads except those of pure tension, when it tends to pull apart. This type of joint is usually either made to be interlocking, as in the mortise and tenon, or reinforced by external members across the join. When adhesive-bonded, side-grain to side-grain joints can be as strong as the wood itself but when the grain of the two pieces is not parallel, complications arise in service as a result of moisture-induced dimensional change.

Dimensional change in response to changes in relative humidity can cause problems in joints when the response of the two members is different. This situation could arise because different timbers were used, or because of the difference in radial and tangential movement in two pieces that were cut differently but is most likely to cause serious problems when grain directions are at right-angles, such as a mortise and tenon jointing a chair leg to a seat rail. This is particularly true if tangential and longitudinal cuts are opposed. Such joints are always apt to self-destruct no matter how firm they may be at first.

Ideally, joints should have uniform dimensions, and regular, smooth, even surfaces that mate perfectly across 100% of their surface area so that applied loads are evenly distributed and unwanted movement in the joint is restricted. Deviation from this ideal may result in loads being unevenly distributed, stress concentrations arising, or movement that will lead to the destruction of glue lines, bearing surfaces and failure of the joint and the structure of which it is a part.

Although with slightly less amps, the tool is strong enough to make the tight, and lasting joints craftsmen expect from biscuit joinery. Makita’s joiner has a one-touch 6 depth setting that allows for immediate depth change when working, and accommodates most common biscuit sizes. Makita’s 3901 plate joiner also features a shaft lock for fast, simple blade changes, and easy to operate cam locks for added security. With a cast aluminum pivot fence with positive stops at 0, 45, and 90 degrees the joiner is always accurate and precise, and is designed to quickly and simply make strong and durable plate joints. The tool has a maximum cut depth of 25/32in, a large top grip handle, no mar rubber strip insert, and is double insulated for additional security/safety on the job. Bought this planer the other day to do some doors. It was all I expected and more. Very strong motor – never even appeared to bog down. Good balance. Depth control is very easy to use and accurate. I actually own a Dewalt and a Makita. I bought the Bosch for the features (i.e.

the fully adjustable fence, the adjustable chip deflector that actually comes with a WORKABLE shop vac adapter – THAT is great!) and the reputation. I have not been disapointed. The Bosch is the best of the three. Until I got the Bosch I was pretty well satisfied with the Makita with the Dewalt pulling up the rear, but the Bosch is the best of the three by far. Strongest motor, Woodrazor carbide blades, shop vac adapter, and that great fence. You will use the fence. It can be set at 90 degrees or any other angle you want – and there is an adjustagble rabbeting stop that basically lets you take it about as deep and wide as you want. By the way, USE a shop vac with this. It will fill up your shop with shavings in a heartbeat – but with a vac hooked up, not a one hit the floor. Overall, this is a super tool at a very reasonable price. Oh yeah, it’s also relative quiet. This one’s a keeper.

I will be using the machine for stud straightening, deck trimming, door/doorway adjustment, cabinet scribing, subfloor leveling … and whatever else comes up. Of these units, the Bosch 1954, Porter-Cable 9118 (possibly 9125), and Festool HL850E seem to be best reguarded by professionals with the Mikita and Dewalt next. But I would say each of these models above have their fans. 

The Bosch 0125, Festool HL850E, and Ryobi HPL51K have the capability to expel sawdust to one side or the other, a much-liked new feature. 

The Porter-Cable 9118 cannot plane flat surfaces like floors (all the others can). 

The Hitachi, Makita, Porter-Cable 9118 models have no dust bag or vacuum sawdust pickup capability at all. 

A long base and a rear handle close to the back end make control easier. Bad control leads to snipe (gouging at start and end of runs). The Festool did the best here, but the (otherwise well liked) Bosch 1594 did poorly. 

For me, I’ve narrowed the field to either the Festool HL850E or the Bosch 1594.

Wood Working Machinery

In the earlier days, woodwork projects were done with the tools that had to be manually operated. The capacity of these tools was low and it took a long time and effort for making a single piece of furniture. However today we have the option of using wood working machinery. This machinery has a motor, which works on electricity or oil. It not only saves time and effort but it also does a better job.

Some of the common woodwork projects machinery is table saw, planer, drilling machine and spindle molder. There is a lot of variety available for the size and capacity of these machines. They can be selected according to the job for which we want to use them.

The table saws can be called as the most useful of the wood working machinery. There are two types of wood saws available. They are the ones with a fixed base and the second ones are those with a moving base. The ones, which are mounted on the table, have a fine grove to on one side of the blade. It is from here that, the crosscut angle will move. In addition, a fence, which guides the wood for cutting, is attached to the same side. This machine is useful for giving cuts in parallel to the sides of the wooden piece.

On the other hand, the sliding table saw slides over the table on which it is mounted. Therefore, we can cut a wooden piece placed it. It is very popularly used for cutting flat panels of wood.

Planer jointer is wood working machinery used for flattening and smoothening of the work piece. It has blades that rotate in the horizontal direction. It also has guiding fence, which will facilitate to give the work piece, a 90-degree cut.

Thicknesser is used for cutting the wood to provide it a uniform thickness. This can be done by smoothening of the wood piece with its help. It is not useful for making the work piece flat.

Stationary drill press as the name suggests is a drilling machine. It facilitates making holes quickly and without any effort. The stationary drilling machines facilitate to make holes that are more accurate. However, the non-stationary machines are more popular due to lightweight and their portability.

Spindle molder is the machinery used for larger workload. It works in the same way as the router. However, it is heavy-duty machinery. The tools that it has are of high speed and high capacity. If it is combined with the feeding machine, it will be one of the most useful wood working machinery.

Band saw is another type of wood working machinery. It is excellent for rip cuts. It is also ideal for having fast cuts. The round cuts, which are to be so precise, can be done with ease using this machine. A band saw generally has a fence which guides the wood so that it can be cut as desired. Moreover, it has a ‘cross can cut bar’ as well, which allows cross cuts as well.

These are some of the wood working machinery available these days. Constant improvements are taking place and hence the capacities, as well as the features of these machines, are improving.
